What is Group Planning Exercise ( GPE ) ?

Group Planning Exercise (GPE) or sometimes called as Military Planning Exercise is the part of GTO task of your SSB interview. Group planning exercise (GPE) is a fun task to do, you need better thinking and fast mind, all you need to do is come out with the best plan to reach your goal. This task has a model placed on the ground, it consists of certain problems which are given to you.
Initially, the Candidate is required to give his own solution and then discuss within his group and come to a common solution that is mutually agreed by the group. So, unlike the Group Discussion where no conclusion was to be reached in this exercise the candidates have to reach a definite conclusion.

Group Planning Exercise ( GPE ) Procedure:

While doing this task all Candidates will be seated in the numerical sequence in “U’ Shape around the Model. The GTO explains various features on the model and clarifies doubts about the same.
Group Planning Exercise is conducted in 5 stages which are as follows:

Stage 1 - Introduction of model

GTO explains only once various features of the model laying on the ground, he will tell you about the marks, direction, scale and other features of the model like roads (Metallic or nonmetallic road), dams, nalas, river, railway lines, police posts, jungle or any other features. If you are having doubts,GTO will ask you once he complete this stage -1 of introduction of model.

Stage 2 - The Narrative of story card by GTO

Now GTO reads a story connected with the model laying on the ground, the story has certain problems in it like a person who is injured or any unsocial element mixing poison in a water tank or going to loot bank or destroying Dam etc. Doubts are to be cleared at the end of the stage.

Stage 3 - Reading of Story card by Candidates

In this stage, you will be given the story card (same from which GTO read the story in Stage 2) to read for 5 Minutes and thereafter the card is collected from you, doubts if any are to be cleared at the end.

Stage 4 - Individual Planning 

After collecting the Story card from you, you will be provided with a sheet of paper and on that sheet of paper you have to write your individual solution in 10 Minutes and No mutual discussions are allowed. At the end of ten minutes, the sheet will be taken back from you.

Stage 5 - Group Planning

In the Final Stage the candidates are required to discuss the group plan for approx 15 Minutes, make a group plan and one of the candidates among the group (you have to decide among yourself who will give the group plan) will get up and give the group plan to the GTO with the help of a pointer.

Group Planning Exercise (GPE) Tips:

  1. Do not forget the time limit. Do accordingly.
  2. Prioritize your tasks, important one's must be done first, don’t just randomly do anything.
  3. Try to assume hidden resource even if it is not mentioned (if there is a river, there must be ferry service for transport).
  4. Listen to other candidates's plan as well.
  5. Divide the group logically for faster and safer accomplishment of tasks. (minimum 2 person will do the task)
  6. Try to use safe method, never put yourself in dangerous situation intentionally.
  7. Read the situation and observe the distance carefully, note down the correct timings in your mind, all tasks must be with respective to time taken and time left.
  8. During the final narration, be clear and loud and make sure you speak in a proper order.
